If you are in cafe, do me a favor: Look around you. What do you see? Take a closer look at the people passing outside the bar, the people shopping at the mall as you. Worse still, go to the nearest fast food chain, what do you see? If I am correct, you see a lot of fat, overweight, obese people. People have simply refused to watch their diets, stopped exercising and are paying dearly for it. Obesity is a worldwide problem as you will find it in every nook and cranny of the earth.
But the problem seems to have escalated in the developed countries. Recent estimates have shown that over four million people in the United States alone suffer from one form of obesity or the other. 22 million of the kids all over the world are obese. The numbers in the UK and Europe are not so far behind. Unfortunately, this is not the pattern among the adults only.
Even kids are becoming monstrously obese as a result of the nutrition they are getting. Globally, there is an estimated count of three hundred million (300 million) obese people and seven hundred and fifty million (750 million) overweight people.
The numbers exploded over the past two decades and seems to continually be on the increase no thanks to our diets, sedentary lifestyle and eating habits. Therefore, it is a common thing these days to find that ailments like diabetes, kidney problems, and heart failure has consistently been on the rise. Therefore there is a global campaign to sensitize people as regards the effects of their lifestyle and habits.
Ironically, the same people who love food are also the ones you’ll find as the first customers of the newest fat loss supplement. These people do not know what it is to live healthily. Ask the majority of the obese people how they feel about themselves and you’ll hear statements like “I hate who I am, I am so fat, big and ugly I can’t get ‘some’, I would give the world to see my penis again”. These and many other comments are rampant among obese people. Other uncommon statements you hear are “only truly spiritual people can reach me as they can see beyond the fat to who I truly am”; This is not surprising as we have gradually neglected the healthy routines that we should keep for activities like sitting in from of the TV with a jug of milk, potatoes, sandwich, cheese burger, name it!
What is responsible for the high rate of obesity globally? In two words, the answer is “Our lifestyle”. We are generation of ‘instants”. Everyone wants an instant thing with the least effort applicable. We have gone from eating healthily and exercising properly to just ordering sandwich over the internet and sitting in front of the TV. As Prof Peter Kopelman said “The fact is that we are in danger of becoming a nation of couch potatoes. But if people spent just a little time in a day walking, we would have an amazing reduction in the number of obese people in the world.”
